Frida Kahlo

This morning when I turned on the tv and ate my cereal I caught the end of the movie 'Frida'. From 1926 until her death, the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo created striking, often shocking, images that reflected her turbulent life. Her pictures, mostly self-portraits and still lifes, were deliberately naive, filled with the bright colors and flattened forms of the Mexican folk art she loved.

She created this painting in 1954, after living most of her adult life in and out of hospitals, suffering from chronic pain, infertility, and amputation. The words "Long Live Life" appear in the watermelon slice. She died 8 days later.
